    All 12 Western Zodiac Signs

Dates, symbols, elements and key traits for all 12 signs of the zodiac

The 12 Zodiac Signs at a Glance

The Western zodiac divides the year into 12 signs, each associated with a date range corresponding to the sun's position in a constellation. Each sign belongs to one of four elements (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and one of three modalities (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable) — together forming a 3×4 matrix that defines every sign's fundamental nature.

Cusp dates: If your birthday falls within 2–3 days of a sign boundary (e.g. October 22–24 for Libra/Scorpio), you may feel traits of both signs. The calculator uses precise date boundaries — but astrologers often consider cusps as blended energies.

    Elements & Modalities Explained

The two fundamental systems that shape every zodiac sign's personality

The Building Blocks of the Zodiac
    🔥
    Fire — Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Passionate, energetic, bold and inspiring. Fire signs are natural leaders who act on instinct and intuition. They bring warmth and enthusiasm to everything they touch but can burn out or overwhelm others.

    🌍
    Earth — Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Practical, reliable, grounded and patient. Earth signs build lasting things and value security. They are the most persistent and resourceful signs — but can be resistant to change and overly cautious.

    💨
    Air — Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Intellectual, communicative, social and curious. Air signs live in the realm of ideas and connection. They are witty, adaptable and open-minded — but can be inconsistent, indecisive or detached emotionally.

    💧
    Water — Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

Intuitive, emotional, empathetic and deep. Water signs feel everything intensely and have powerful inner lives. They are highly perceptive and creative — but can be prone to moodiness or escapism.

    ⚡ Cardinal — Initiators
Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. Cardinal signs start things — they are initiators, pioneers and leaders. Each begins a season (Aries = spring, Cancer = summer, Libra = autumn, Capricorn = winter).
    🏔️ Fixed — Builders
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. Fixed signs sustain and stabilise — they are determined, persistent and resistant to change. They are the most focused and committed of the three modalities.
    🌊 Mutable — Adapters
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. Mutable signs are flexible and adaptable — they close out seasons and embrace transitions. They are the most versatile and open to change.

The complete 12-year cycle of Chinese astrology with years and personality traits

    The Chinese Zodiac Cycle

The Chinese zodiac (生肖, Shēngxiào) is a 12-year repeating cycle where each year is associated with an animal and its characteristics. Unlike Western astrology which is based on the month of birth, Chinese zodiac is determined by birth year. The cycle begins with the Rat and ends with the Pig. Each animal also carries a five-element assignment (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) on a 10-year cycle, creating a 60-year "Sexagenary Cycle" before exact combinations repeat.

🏮 Important: Chinese New Year falls between January 21 and February 20 each year. If you were born in January or early February, your Chinese zodiac year may be the previous year's animal. For example, someone born on February 5, 1995 (before the 1995 CNY) would be a Dog, not a Pig.

    Surprising Facts About the Zodiac
    🏛️
Astrology Is Over 3,000 Years Old

Western astrology traces its roots to ancient Babylon around 2000–1600 BCE. The Babylonians developed the first zodiac system by observing the stars over centuries. Greek astronomers later refined it, and the 12-sign zodiac we use today was fully formed by around 400 BCE. It remains the oldest continuously practised predictive system in human history.

    🔭
Your Sun Sign Is Only One of Many

In a full birth chart (natal chart), there are over 40 astrological factors — the positions of the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto at birth, plus rising sign (ascendant), house positions and aspect angles. Most people only know their Sun sign, which represents roughly 2–3% of a full astrological reading.

    🌍
Precession Has Shifted the Actual Constellations

Due to Earth's axial precession (a wobble that completes every 26,000 years), the zodiac constellations have shifted about 23 degrees since Western astrology was codified. This means the Sun is now actually in Pisces during "Aries season." Western (tropical) astrology uses seasons rather than actual star positions — while Vedic (sidereal) astrology uses the real constellation positions.

    🏮
The Chinese Zodiac Has a 60-Year Grand Cycle

While the 12 animals are well known, the full Chinese zodiac cycles through 60 unique year types — 12 animals × 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). This 60-year Sexagenary Cycle is deeply embedded in Chinese culture, philosophy and the traditional Chinese calendar. Your 60th birthday marks a full cycle completion — a major celebration called "Kanreki" in Japan.

    🐉
The Dragon Is the Only Mythical Chinese Zodiac Animal

Of the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, 11 are real animals. Only the Dragon is mythical — and it is the most auspicious sign in Chinese culture. Birth years of the Dragon see significantly higher birth rates in China, Hong Kong and other Confucian-influenced countries, as parents seek to have Dragon babies for the fortune and power associated with the sign.

Libra Is the Only Non-Living Symbol in the Western Zodiac

Of the 12 Western zodiac signs, 11 represent living beings (8 animals + 3 humans/humanoids). Only Libra is represented by an inanimate object — a pair of scales. This reflects Libra's core themes of balance, justice and objectivity. It is also the only cardinal air sign and the only sign associated with the autumnal equinox (day and night are equal).

    📊
There's No Scientific Evidence Zodiac Signs Predict Personality

Multiple large-scale studies — including analysis of over 2,000 astrological charts vs personality tests (Shawn Carlson, Nature, 1985) and replication studies — have found no statistically significant correlation between sun sign and personality traits. Astrology remains a cultural and psychological tool rather than a scientifically validated predictive system, though it continues to be widely valued for self-reflection.

    🐍
    There's Actually a 13th Constellation: Ophiuchus

The constellation Ophiuchus (the serpent-bearer) lies on the ecliptic between Scorpio and Sagittarius, and the Sun passes through it for about 18 days (November 29 – December 17). NASA acknowledged this in 2016, causing widespread media coverage. However, Western astrology deliberately uses only 12 signs based on seasons, not constellations, so Ophiuchus is not included in the traditional zodiac.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about zodiac signs, astrology and birth charts

What are the 12 zodiac signs and their dates?
The 12 Western zodiac signs and their dates are: Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19), Taurus (Apr 20–May 20), Gemini (May 21–Jun 20), Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22), Leo (Jul 23–Aug 22), Virgo (Aug 23–Sep 22), Libra (Sep 23–Oct 22), Scorpio (Oct 23–Nov 21), Sagittarius (Nov 22–Dec 21), Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19), Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18), Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20). These dates occasionally shift by a day due to the leap year cycle, which is why a calculator using your exact birth date is more precise than memorising fixed dates.
What is the Chinese zodiac and how does it work?
The Chinese zodiac assigns an animal to each year in a 12-year cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each animal has associated personality traits, compatible and incompatible animals, and lucky/unlucky numbers and colours. Each animal also cycles through 5 elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) creating a 60-year grand cycle. Note: Chinese New Year falls in late January or early February — if you're born in January/early February, you may belong to the previous year's animal.
What does my zodiac element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) mean?
Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are passionate, energetic and action-oriented — natural leaders who inspire others. Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) are grounded, practical and reliable — builders who create lasting things. Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are intellectual, communicative and social — thinkers who live in the world of ideas. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are intuitive, emotional and empathetic — deep feelers with powerful instincts. Your element describes your fundamental approach to life, relationships and decision-making.
What is a rising sign (ascendant) and do I have one?
Yes — everyone has a rising sign (also called the ascendant). While your sun sign is determined by your birth date, your rising sign is determined by the exact time and location of your birth — specifically, which zodiac sign was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. The rising sign changes approximately every 2 hours, completing a full 12-sign cycle each day. It represents how you appear to others and your outward personality, as opposed to the sun sign which represents your core identity. To calculate your rising sign, you need your exact birth time and location.
    Is astrology scientifically proven?
No — astrology is not scientifically validated. Multiple rigorous studies, including a famous double-blind test by physicist Shawn Carlson published in Nature (1985), found that astrologers could not match birth charts to personality profiles better than chance. Large-scale studies of personality traits vs sun signs have similarly found no significant correlation. However, astrology remains widely valued as a psychological and cultural tool for self-reflection, meaning-making and community. Using zodiac descriptions for personality insight is similar to using personality frameworks like MBTI — useful for self-exploration, not scientific prediction.
What is the rarest zodiac sign?
Ophiuchus is sometimes cited as a 13th "hidden" zodiac sign (November 29–December 17) that is technically on the ecliptic but excluded from traditional astrology. Among the standard 12 signs, Aquarius and Capricorn tend to have the fewest birthdays in many countries because their seasons (late January–February, late December–January) often overlap with periods of lower birth rates. Scorpio and Sagittarius are sometimes cited as having the highest birth rates in many countries, making them the most "common" signs statistically.
