What Are Working Days & Why Do They Matter?

The complete guide to business days, counting methods, and international variations

    Fundamentals
Business Days vs Calendar Days — Understanding the Difference

A working day (also called a business day) is any day that is neither a weekend nor a public holiday. In most Western countries, working days are Monday through Friday, giving a standard 5-day working week. However, this varies significantly across cultures and industries.

The distinction between calendar days and working days is critically important in contracts, project management, legal documents, and financial transactions. Consider this: "30 calendar days" is simply 30 days on the calendar. "30 working days" is roughly 6 weeks — because it skips 10 weekends and any public holidays that fall in that period.

📌 Real-world impact: A contract requiring "10 business days" for a payment starting on a Thursday before a long weekend could mean 3 calendar weeks rather than 2. Getting this wrong can breach SLAs, miss legal deadlines, or incur penalty clauses. Always verify the correct interpretation — calendar days vs business days.

Working days are used in: project planning and sprint tracking, employment contracts (notice periods), legal proceedings (response and filing deadlines), financial settlements (T+2, T+1 trade settlement), payroll calculations, SLA agreements, shipping and delivery estimates, and loan payment due dates.

    📋
    Project Management
Sprint velocity, resource allocation, and milestone tracking all rely on accurate working day counts. Missing weekends and holidays can push deadlines by 20–30% on short sprints.
    ~260 working days/year
    ⚖️
    Legal & Contracts
Notice periods, response deadlines, and contract terms are often stated in business days. "14 working days" is nearly 3 calendar weeks — a significant difference in legal proceedings.
    Used in court filings
    💰
    Payroll & HR
Monthly payroll calculations, daily rate calculations, leave accruals, and overtime counting all require accurate working day counts — especially when months differ in length.
    20–23 days per month
    🚚
    Logistics & Delivery
Shipping estimates ("2–3 business days") depend on the carrier's working week, public holidays, and cut-off times. Getting this right prevents customer service issues.

How to Calculate Working Days — Formulas & Methods

Step-by-step guide to manually counting business days with the exact formula used by this calculator

    Calculation Methods
Working Days Formula — Step by Step

There are three levels of complexity when calculating working days, depending on your requirements:

    MethodFormula / ApproachAccounts ForUse When
    1. Simple Weekday Count Total days − Weekend days Weekends only Quick estimates, no holidays
    2. Business Days with Holidays Total − Weekends − Holidays Weekends + public holidays Contracts, SLAs, payroll
    3. Net Working Hours Working days × Hours − Breaks Weekends + holidays + hours/breaks Billing, contractor pay, project cost
Manual Calculation Example: March 3 to March 21, 2025
    1
Count total calendar days in the range
March 3 to March 21 = 19 calendar days (inclusive of both start and end)
    Calendar days = end day number − start day number + 1 = 21 − 3 + 1 = 19 days
    2
Count weekend days (Saturdays and Sundays)
    Week 1: Sat Mar 8, Sun Mar 9 = 2 weekend days
    Week 2: Sat Mar 15, Sun Mar 16 = 2 weekend days
    Total weekend days = 4
Count each Saturday and Sunday that falls within the date range, inclusive of start and end dates.
    3
Identify public holidays falling on weekdays
Check calendar for holidays between Mar 3–21, 2025
No US Federal holidays in this range
Public holidays to subtract = 0
Always check both the exact date and the observed date. For example, a holiday on Sunday might be observed on Monday.
    4
    Calculate net working days
Working Days = Total Days − Weekend Days − Public Holidays
    = 19 − 4 − 0
    = 15 working days
This is the formula this calculator uses. All three components must be accurate for the result to be correct.
    5
    Calculate working hours (optional)
Total Working Hours = Working Days × Hours per Day
    = 15 × 8 = 120 hours
    Net hours (minus 1hr lunch) = 15 × 7 = 105 hours
For contractor billing: 120 hrs × $50/hr = $6,000 total. For project capacity: 120 hours available in this window.
🔧 Excel / Sheets formula: = NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, [holidays]) — this built-in function counts working days between two dates, optionally excluding a list of holiday dates. For adding working days: = WORKDAY(start_date, days, [holidays])

    Working Days Calculator FAQs

Answers to the most common questions about counting business days and working day rules

What is the difference between calendar days and working days?
Calendar days are simply all 365 days (or 366 in a leap year) — every day counts, including weekends and public holidays.

Working days (also called business days) exclude weekends and public holidays. A standard 5-day working week yields approximately 260 working days per year.

The difference is enormous in practice:
    • 10 calendar days = 10 days
    • 10 working days = ~2 calendar weeks (14 days)
    • 30 working days = ~6–7 calendar weeks (42–49 days)

Always clarify which is meant in contracts, employment agreements, and SLAs — the ambiguity can cause significant disputes.
How do I count business days between two dates correctly?
To manually count business days between two dates:

    1. Count total calendar days in the range (decide whether to include start date, end date, or both)
    2. Subtract weekend days — count all Saturdays and Sundays in the range
    3. Subtract public holidays that fall on weekdays in the range
    4. The result is the number of net working days

Formula: Working Days = Total Days − Weekend Days − Public Holidays

This calculator does all three steps automatically. You can also use the Excel function NETWORKDAYS(start, end, holidays) for the same result.

Important edge case: if a public holiday falls on a Saturday, its "observed" date may be the Friday before — always use observed dates, not the official holiday date, when counting working days.
How do I add working days to a date?
To add N working days to a start date:

    1. Start from the given date (decide whether it counts as Day 0 or Day 1)
    2. Count forward day by day, but skip every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday
    3. Stop when you've counted N working days
    4. The current date is your result

Example: Add 5 business days to Friday, January 3, 2025 (Day 0):
    • Mon Jan 6 = Day 1
    • Tue Jan 7 = Day 2
    • Wed Jan 8 = Day 3
    • Thu Jan 9 = Day 4
    • Fri Jan 10 = Day 5 ✔

But wait — Monday January 20, 2025 is MLK Day. If the range included that, it would be skipped and Day 5 would be pushed to the following day.

In Excel: = WORKDAY(start_date, days, [holidays])
How many working days are there in a year?
A standard working year has approximately 260–262 weekdays (Monday–Friday) and around 249–252 net working days after subtracting public holidays.

    Exact counts by year:
2025: 261 weekdays, ~250 net working days (US Federal)
2026: 261 weekdays, ~252 net working days (US Federal)

    Country variations (approximate):
    • United Kingdom: ~252 weekdays, ~243 net (8 bank holidays)
    • India: ~261 weekdays, ~243 net (17+ national/state holidays)
    • Australia: ~261 weekdays, ~251 net (8–10 national holidays)
    • France: ~261 weekdays, ~250 net (11 jours fériés)

The exact number varies because: (1) leap years add Feb 29, (2) which day of the week holidays fall on changes each year, and (3) observed holiday rules shift holidays from weekends to Mon/Fri.
Does Saturday count as a working day?
In most Western countries (US, UK, Europe, Australia, Canada), Saturday is not a working day — it is a weekend day along with Sunday, giving a standard Mon–Fri working week.

However, Saturday IS a working day in several contexts:
Middle East countries (Saudi Arabia, Israel, many Gulf states historically): working week was Sun–Thu, making Friday and Saturday the weekend. The UAE switched to Mon–Fri in 2022.
Some industries (retail, hospitality, construction): staff may work on Saturdays, but for contracts and legal purposes, Saturday is still typically a non-working day
6-day working week countries: some countries or employers use a Mon–Sat schedule, where Saturday is a half or full working day
Part-time or shift workers: their personal working days may include Saturday

This calculator lets you configure your weekend days — choose Sat+Sun, Fri+Sat, Sun-only, or no weekend days.
What is NETWORKDAYS in Excel and how does it relate to this calculator?
Excel's NETWORKDAYS function calculates the number of working days between two dates, excluding weekends and optionally excluding specified holiday dates.

    Basic syntax: = NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date)
    With holidays: = NETWORKDAYS(start_date, end_date, holidays_range)

By default, NETWORKDAYS counts both the start and end dates as working days (if they are weekdays), and excludes Saturdays and Sundays as weekends.

NETWORKDAYS.INTL extends this with a custom weekend parameter: = NETWORKDAYS.INTL(start, end, weekend, holidays) — where weekend can be "0000011" for Saturday+Sunday, "1100000" for Mon+Tue, etc.

This calculator mirrors NETWORKDAYS.INTL logic — supporting custom weekend definitions plus country-specific holiday exclusions — making it a web-based equivalent of the Excel function.
How are working days calculated for employment notice periods?
Employment notice periods stated in "working days" or "business days" exclude weekends and public holidays. This means the actual calendar duration is longer than the number of working days suggests.

    Common notice periods:
    • US: At-will employment — notice is a courtesy, not legally required
    • UK: Statutory minimum 1 week per year of service (up to 12 weeks); most professional roles require 1–3 months
    • India: Typically 30–90 days notice, often stated in calendar days
    • Australia: 1–4 weeks statutory notice plus any contractual requirement

Example calculation: If you give 20 working days notice starting Monday March 3, 2025:
    • Count 20 working days forward from March 4 (the day after you give notice)
    • Skipping weekends and any public holidays in that period
    • Result: end date falls around March 31, 2025

Use the "Add Working Days" mode of this calculator to find your exact notice period end date.
How do I calculate daily pay rate from annual salary?
There are two common methods for calculating daily pay from an annual salary:

    Method 1: Actual Working Days
Daily Rate = Annual Salary ÷ Number of Working Days in the Year
    Example: $60,000 ÷ 250 working days = $240/day

    Method 2: Fixed 260 Days
    Daily Rate = Annual Salary ÷ 260 (52 weeks × 5 days)
    Example: $60,000 ÷ 260 = $230.77/day

Method 3: Monthly (most common in HR systems)
Monthly Salary = Annual ÷ 12; Daily = Monthly ÷ Working Days in Month
    Example: $60,000 ÷ 12 = $5,000/month; $5,000 ÷ 21 working days = $238.10/day for that month

The method used matters for partial month calculations (e.g., someone who starts or leaves mid-month). Method 3 is most accurate for payroll purposes as it reflects the actual number of working days in each month.
